Ok, so as many of you probably do, you have your "casual" jerseys you wear out publically (games, etc.). And then of course your "gamers" that you play in. Some have their collectable jerseys which are never worn since they are often game used. Anyway. My favorite players of all time (After Roy) are Marc Denis and Peter Budaj. Very recently thanks to gamewornauctions.net I FINALLY got game used Avs Denis AND Avs Budaj jerseys. Now, I had previously gotten ahold of a game ISSUED Budaj jersey from Meigrey. And here's where my dilemna comes in. When Budaj was in Colorado the only jerseys I was able to afford at the time were the lower end replicas, which are by this point falling apart. I can't get a new authentic Colorado one now as they switched to the REEBOK on the back instead of the vector logo. And I'm picky about that stuff. Plus the legit game ones are top notch anyway. Should I feel weird about having the game ISSUED moved over to my casual section and wear it, wash it, etc. Since technically he never even wore it. Or would that still be taboo? Just looking for some opinions.

ALWAYS looking for new/used/broken beyond repair Peter Budaj, Marc Denis, Semyon Varlamov, JS Giguere, and Andrew Penner goalie gear/jerseys. And goalie gear in general.

It's all up to you. Personally, I buy to wear, there are very few items I could see myself buying and putting on the shelf.

I wouldn't run the risk of getting blood or beer spilled on game issued sweaters.

I'm also very picky about jerseys and personally I will not wear anything that has a COA/LOA.  My expectations as a collector buying a jersey with a COA/LOA is that a game worn was only worn by the player in game action and a game-issued is in brand new unused condition and was actualy prepared for use (i.e. not just an extra the team made up as a spare).

However, if you plan to keep it forever, I don't see a problem with wearing a game-issued jersey.  Like you said, it was prepared for his use but he never wore it.  With MeiGray prominence, you can gaurantee that it probably hung in his stall with the intent of being game used, but I doubt he even touched it.  For all intents and purposes it is really nothing more than a brand new on-ice authentic with top notch customization.  Just don't put it through repeated wear/wash cycles and try to sell it as a MeiGray GI jersey in a few years without mentioning you used it.

Yes, blood, sweat and beer might start making the jersey more like a game worn. Lol

Hmmm. I mean i've held out this long but when I eventually have the space to hang all these up, (I have his rookie practice jersey, a middle practice jersey, his second to last practice jersey, a game used photo matched jersey), what will I say about the GI one? Uh yeah... they made it but he never wore it. :P I dunno...such a strange hobby we have eh?

What do you want to do with the jersey?  In the sports memorabilia market items are only worth as much as what someone is willing to pay.  I've seen guys cringe at me after I told them I've gotten my game used equipment signed.  Some collectors want their gear left in the same condition as it came off the ice.  Me personally, I don't intend on selling the majority of items I've acquired so I do as I like.

Two years ago I had the opportunity to play at Rogers Arena and I decided to break out one of my game issued Canucks jerseys to match the rest of my set up.  Do whatever makes you happy in the end.  Don't worry about how you will be perceived by others.

I agree with M too...

When it comes to the GI jerseys, I have a few as well, I see it as they were made for the player to use by the club in question and to me that's special. It was made for the player who just didn't get around to using it.

Mostly I don't wear my GW/GI jerseys and intend on keeping them all, but on the occasion I do wear them i won't think twice about it and just go out and have fun :)

When I go to games, I always wear a GW/GI jersey.  I don't have a big collection, but I'm particular about what I wear, and don't own any replicas.  I'd rather own no jersey than a replica, I guess.  That said, I never would wear one of those jerseys to actually play a game in and sweat up.

I do have plenty of pro stock practice jerseys which I have no problem wearing during beer league games.

My view, as a guy who has more than a few jerseys in his collection:

First, if you want to wear it, wear it.  If it is yours and you intend to keep it and not flip it to someone else, then a game worn jersey is yours to do what you want to with it.  But if you are planning on selling it to another collector as a game worn jersey, then you should disclose that you've sat around on your couch in it, or worn it to a game, etc.  Nobody does, because it doing so is going to devalue the jersey to other collectors, but that's a risk a collector like me takes when buying from someone else. Especially over ebay.

Second, as a collector, I view a game issued jersey is pretty much the same as a high end authentic.  It may have been made for someone to wear, but there's nothing in particular that is special about that.  What is nice about them is that they are made and customized correctly for the team, and there's a gazillion "authentics" out there that are not at all authentic.  They use the wrong fonts, wrong colors, poor stitching, or slap stuff on a jersey that was never meant to be used on the ice.  This is why you can get game issued jerseys for pretty reasonable prices.  And this is why I wouldn't hesistate to buy a game issued jersey over an authentic jersey any day of the week.  At least you know you're getting the real thing.  Obviously places like Meigray place a premium price on game issued jerseys for premium players.  But they do that because they can.  Not because there's anything particularly special about them.

Third, remember that if you do wear these, they're jerseys.  They can handle a lot of wear and tear, can be washed, etc.  No need to treat them like they're a silk suit.
