Hey guys,

So idk if this is even possible or good idea to do at all, but what's the best way to clean and wash skates? I'm one of those guys that doesn't wear socks in my skates because I feel like my foot is suffocating in there when I do.  So with that being said, of course my skates smell terrible.

Anyone have any good cleaning options? was thinking about doing it the same way I was told to clean my gloves (hot water, oxyclean, rinse, etc.) would that work?

Thanks boys,

Dave

baking powder sprinkled over the soles may help.

What kind of feedback do you get from the guys who sharpen your skates?

Two things that pop to mind:

- spray bottle with alcohol to kill the bacteria which is what causes the smell

- fill an old sock with kitty-litter and stuff em in your skates over night - similar as with the hint on the baking powder it soaks up moisture and smells, but it doesn't do much against bacteria so they will smell again once wet

Stuff them with dryer sheets.

i like the dryer sheet idea for the smell, probably gonna try the alcohol for getting rid of the bacteria

After cleaning, I'd suggest taking the insoles out and  putting the skates upside down.

You should always do this after you play. Helps to not rot the rivets

Man i HATED sharpening guys skates who didn't wear socks, even having my mask on didn't help.

I think the hot water/oxyclean scrub is the best way to go.

When I get home from a skate I spray a mix of rubbing alcohol and peroxide on the interior of my gloves, shins elbows pants and shoulder pads. For skates, I pull the tongues forward, remove the insoles, spray in the alcohol mixture and let dry. Definitely keeps the smell at bay.

What do you mix it at 50/50?

One would think if you put your skates in the tub and you didn't dry it all the way the rivets would begin to rust. Idk much about cleaning skates as I use socks and remove the insoles after each skate to dry so mine dont smell that bad.

What do you mix it at 50/50?

Probably 70% Alcohol, 30% peroxide.

i skate barefoot too and know exactly what your issue is. i actually pressure wash them twice a year or so. if you have felt tongues the amount of ooze that comes out when you pressure wash it is crazy. takes about 2 days for them to dry out. seems crazy to do them this way but i've been doing it for years and no problems with the skates breaking down from getting so wet and it really does get them clean.
