the hp45 are made oversea's & have an extra poly insert in between the kindey & hip pads. the upper / lower button & hole pattern are little different . both are super protective GREAT pants.

I'm going to piggyback off this... are the hp45s bulky? And how are the uppers, do they feel like they're going up your back?

I have owned a pair of both.  HP520s are heavier to me a bit more bulky in my opinon and maybe just a hair longer.  The hp45's are the same model as retail RBZs which took over the crazy light model for retail and UCLP for pro stock.   They are very light weight and probably the best pants I have owned.  My only issue with them is that yes, that back piece does run a little high in the back.  If you have a long torso or just taller in general they are fine.  With my height being 5'9" they had a tendency to rub with the bottom my shoulder pads.  I just moved from a large shoulder pad to a medium and that helped.  Many people have said that the UCLPs and HP45s run small, I don't know about that.  Maybe just a little.  I wear a large, but I could maybe go down to a medium if I didn't have as much of a beer belly as I do. Hope this helps.
