I know there have been numerous threads on removing the stickers and markings from retail helmets. I found this method has been the easiest, most effective way to remove everything undesirable without damaging the helmet.
I just received my new CCM Tacks 310 helmet in white today with a new CCM Revision visor, and wanted to set it up as a Leafs away helmet. Here's what you will need:
- Goof off
- A magic eraser, preferably with one side smooth and one side textured
- A paper towel
That's it.
Start with the fresh helmet, and put a half dime sized amount of Goof Off on the corner of the magic eraser.
Before:
After about 30 seconds of scrubbing with moderate pressure:
After one minute or so of scrubbing. When you first scrub, there will be a lot of black/white come off, so move to a different part of the magic eraser with fresh Goof Off and wipe the area clean with the paper towel.
After 2-3 minutes of scrubbing. Looks good to me. No sign of the CCM logo anymore.
Once the logos are removed, take a hair dryer to the back of the helmet. Warm up all the stickers, and peel them off slowly. This will loosen up the glue so they come off more cleanly. If you pull them off and the paper remains, you'll scratch the plastic trying to get it all off with your fingernail. If there's any glue/paper left, use the Goof Off and magic eraser to clean it up, then wipe it all clean with a paper towel.
Once all this is done, apply your team decals. I take my time with this so they're straight. Finally, adjust the chin strap to your liking, and cut off the excess, leaving a little bit (maybe 1/2-3/4") past the buckle. After you cut it, burn the end with a lighter, so it doesn't fray.
Then there ya go. You have a pro stock helmet at non-pro stock prices. I personally love the Tacks 310 helmet over all other helmets I've ever tried. It is BY FAR the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn. So I'd rather do this on my retail helmet then having a "pro stock" helmet that isn't perfect. To me there's very little difference. Maybe a little less gloss, and the rear adjustment piece on the Tacks 310 doesn't match the Resistance pro stock. Big deal. (Don't mind the dog hair, the helmet had static and the dogs were running around like loons when I was trying to do this.)
