without straying from the topic too much - since we are talking legitimacy of a "pro stock" helmet - is there much of a difference between a pro stock and retail helmet other than the stickers? Is there a way to tell?

I had a ton of helmets from the Thrashers. Some are same as retail. Some have slightly different padding. Like some of the Bauer helmets. 9900 pro2 for example. Or Easton s9 pro

Only way I tell is if it's branded on sides of helmet?? Pro buckets have only team logo on sides & no company name...I haven't seen retail without co. Logos on the side... Ya u can rub it off but helmet usually looks like crap after..

Out of the helmets I've had

Reebok 8K seems the same (although, I think the retail ones generally come with different color carbon inserts)
CCM V08 seems the same
Easton S9 has a "pro" option which has slightly different padding
Bauer 9500/9900 has a "pro2" option which has totally different padding
Bauer 5100 "pro2" has a "ML" size option (which I currently use). I guess it's between a Med and Large.
Cascade M11 seems the same, although I have never checked out a retail one
Bauer 4500 seems the same
CCM HT500 and 852 not sure, as I am not familair with the retail ones.
Easton S17 seems the same
Easton S19 seems the same

Of course, everything lacked the side logos (and in some cases, such as the 9900, no rear logo either)

I removed the Bauer logos on my 4500 this week. sprayed some contacted cleaner, rubbed a bit. done in 10 seconds... that's all it took.

As easy as that, it will be easy to fool ppl with that. so keep your head up on ebay and those places.

I tried it on my white reebok but the black logos didn't come off.

I think part of it depends on the league. I have an ECHL reebok 8k with logos on the side. However the only reason I can tell its pro stock is because it has the word logo on the front, which was never offered on retail 8ks.

WTB (longshots):

  • Letang, Hossa, Yakupov, Datsyuk, Duchene, Kane, Karlsson, Ovi, Vanek, Hall, Gaborik, Malkin, Crosby, Kovalchuk, Lidstrom, RNH, Tavares, Landeskog gloves
  • Eberle, Kessel, Giroux, Ovi, Iginla stick

Ppl say no side decals but on my favourite lid the Nike 0004, I have seen pro stock in NHL with side decals before.

Aside from someone picking them up from team sales, prob the only real way of knowing these days.
