Hey everyone. I was hoping to get some advice on pain I've been having in my new skates. First some background.

Prior to this weekend, I had been skating in Nexus N7000 skates (Size 7.5 D) for about 18 months. I was getting some discomfort from them recently and never felt like I had a great heel lock so I decided to get new skates. I went to the Pure Hockey store nearby and they had one of the Bauer 3D Skate Labs so we gave that a whirl.  I tried it 2 times, once standing up straight and once with knee bend, and it came back both times saying I belonged in the Supreme Line, size 6.5 D. The only issue is that my left foot and right foot are different. My left foot was pretty much spot on or a bit smaller than 6.5 and exactly a D width. My right foot though is more like 6.75 and closer to a EE width. I wanted to get a better quality boot as I'm playing 3-4 times a week now so I had them bring out a 6.5 D Supreme S180. In store my left foot felt perfect and my right foot felt a little snug in the forefoot right behind the toe box but not painful. My toes were brushing the toe cap on the left and and little tighter on the right but felt fine when getting into a hockey stance. It seemed like a good fit so we went with it and baked them. I skated for the first time in them 24 hours later and it was not a pleasurable experience to say the least. On my left foot everything felt fine for the most part except I was getting some pain/pressure on my inside ankle area. On my right foot I was getting the same issue on my inside ankle area but also some discomfort in the area right before the toe box. I chalked it up to just needing to break them in as well as get use to the stiffer boot and got through it. I skated again last night and it seemed like the discomfort in my right foot only got worse with some of the same pressure/pain in my left foot around the inside ankle. I've also got what seems to be a blister right on the inside ankle of my right foot.

This is my first time in a higher end boot so I'm trying to figure out if this is normal and will go away as I get more time in them or if there is a bigger issue that isn't going to solve itself. I am only an average skater so I also wonder if I went with too stiff a boot and would be better off in an S170. My other concern is that with the differences between my two feet, if I stay in a D I think my right foot may be in a skate that's too narrow but it's just fine for my left. If I go to a EE it will be the opposite with my right foot being probably just right but with my left foot being in a boot that's too wide. I'm not sure which is a better compromise.

Apologies for the long winded post but was hoping to get some recommendations or advice on what to do here based on everyone's experience. Thanks in advance for the help!

Just out of curiosity what shoe size do you wear?

Usually a 9 or 9.5 depending on the type of shoe.

Are you looking to stay in your current skates and find a solution, or get new skates? I have weird feet as well. Should be in a Supreme, but my instep is very high and went to a Nexus. I too had heel slip issues in the Nexus, nothing bad but not great. I went with VH/True because I was done chasing around skates for the better part of over a decade. Now, if you fit into the skates volume wise, heel wise, and the only issue is the width, I'd have them stretched or punched out. If you have a good local shop, they can get you set up very easily. Most people who have minor issues can be resolved through this. Skates, over time, will break in more. But if you're experiencing a lot of pain, the break in isn't going to fix all of it.

A rebake may be a good starting point, sounds like you will need to find a shop that has the Custom Skate Works toe box punch.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I went and tried on some other skates this evening (primarily ribcor line skates). The RibCor skates felt much better but I couldn't find anything that felt perfect. It's hard to say what a bake will do. From what I can tell my issue is a combination of the stiffness of the boot and the width on my right foot. I'm thinking the jump from the N7000 boot to the S180 boot is probably way more than I'm ready for. I unfortunately ran out of time but I will probably go try a S170 E width if I can find one. I'm also trying to figure out if the RibCor 66k is a better progression from the N7000 or if I should go up to the 68 or 70.

I just went in to the local shop and tried a whole bunch of skates because my Nexus N8000 were causing pain along the outside. I also felt like I was never really locked in good with the Nexus and it I was fitted into a S180 in the same size. The initial fit was pretty uncomfortable and I couldnt see how it would get better, so they talked me into trying the S170 (Supreme Comp model, S170 with slight upgrades).

In the same size this skate was much more comfortable for some reason. I actually felt like I could just go play with them from trying them on. I know I will have some break in discomfort but I have decided to go with those and will be trying them out next week. Im hoping this help solve some issues for me.

I have a friend who has the S180 and he had said that they were the longest "break-in" that hes ever experienced but now they are much more comfortable. He was ready to give up at one point though and just get a different skate.. Id stick with the 180 myself and maybe try a rebake (they just didnt fit me well off the hop)

I had a Ribcore skate previously and I can tell you that even though the Nexus and Ribcore are geared toward "traditional feel and fit" they are the narrowest/shallowest skate I have ever tried on. If you need width, I personally wouldnt recommend the Ribcore.

I have wide feet, and I got fitted and I went for Nexus N9000, one bake, no break in, hopefully they'll last me a few years.

I ended up returning the S180s and went to Ribcor 68Ks. I skated in them for the first time Saturday and they felt great. I didn't have any issues with pain in the spots where the 180s were bothering me. They seem like they have a great balance between stiffness and flexibility. I'm looking forward to getting some more time in them this week.

thats great that they worked out.. I had the 46k and were WAY too narrow and went to a N8000.... WAY too big.... Retail skates are a crapshoot for me. Never owned a pair that didnt cause some pain.

And before someone responds, I'd love to be able to afford a pair of $1000+ True/VH skates

I had a similar issue . Unable to get good heel lock - started in a vapor d width , tried a supreme & got lace bite - my instep is too high . Ended up going down half a size in a vapor boot and ee width . Heel lock is now 100% - but have some negative space in the forefoot in the ee width . Seesaw lol, i know everyone is different but figured I would share that . I never tried a nexus boot . Contemplating trying out the ccm high end boots just for giggles to see . Slightly thicker socks or the form-fit footbeds with the 3 flaps on the toe box could aid in taking up negative forefoot space im thinking .

Thats strange. Was the Supreme in D width? I couldnt even lace up the Vapors in EE, I could see felt from the tongue halfway down the skate because my foot was busting out (same issue with ribcore).

Yes supreme was a 7D and same thing tongue was partially raised away from boot when laced.  Thinking about trying supertacks / nexus line next maybe . No sure where to go from here , I fall in between a 6.5 & 7 in bauer .

FWIW Super Tacks and Nexus are a completely different fit. I am in Super Tacks now coming off of Supreme 190s. These 2 I find to be most similar fitting with the exception of a lower toe box and a better wrap in the Tacks, hence the switch. The Nexus seemed a bit cavernous for me. Anyone else may throw in their opinion, agree or disagree. Regards, Dave

I had the Nexus and it was huge. I needed the superfeet just to fill some space.

I tried on the Tacks and the boot itself was very comfortable and the wrap was awesome but the toebox was SO narrow compared to the boot. I felt the seams on both sides where the toebox started.

In the Supreme the tongue is partially lifted at my instep but it was a bit the the Nexus also (both EE width), but nothing  like the Ribcore.

Mine are like this pic of the supreme

the yellow is the tongue slightly lifted from the red eyelets.

I have NEVER seen a boot fit like the right where the eyelets are flush with the tongue

I 100% agree with the last comment. I am sure my fit in that same area is the same, was definitely lower in the Nexus but the entire boot felt too roomy, in the Tacks i feel zero negative space.
