Initial thoughts:
I've preface by saying this: I did a thing. A very... stupid thing. The thing I did was I didn't cross-grind them before I sharpened. I completely forgot that when I had my LS3+DLC runners that they came sharpened from NoIcing Sports, so no sharpening issues throughout their life. But, these runnners didn't come sharpened (my fault), and after about 6 passes on my Sparx machine, it's... no longer sharpening not dead and still working! Again, my fault, and I erred. But casting aside that THING I did and take full responsibility for, I did get a chance to try them out on the ice. And... impressive. When it comes to glide, these things just slice thru the ice like nobody's business. Coming from the LS3+DLC, it felt like I didn't need to skate nor work as hard. The concepts I created above pretty much nailed the finished look of the runners, so I'm happy Tydan was able to churn out what I envisioned (simple design, nothing flashy) and with a super quick turnaround. While, I wouldn't go as far as to say that these are game changing, out-of-this-park, got-to-buy-it-now kind of thing, I will say that the on-ice feel, craftsmanship, and turn-around time: A+. I don't have much to add for now, but I plan on following up in about a month or two. I want to give these time to showcase their edge durability, coating resilience, and consistency of on-ice feel.

With these becoming more popular in the NHL and my propensity for rooting for up-and-coming companies (like VH Footwear back in 2014), I hope to hear and see more of these guys in the coming months/years.

If nice to see how far they have come! I was using their original DLC edge steel before Step came out.

Same day shipping with profiling and a sharpen. Can’t beat that customer service

I'd wish someone could comment on these vs step. I'd love to do a review but I don't need a 4th set of steel. I am curious to see how well these are against step blacksteel. A big positive is that they allow you to customize them which I'm sure is a big things for people on here.

Looking for BIOSTEEL jersey made by UA or Adidas.

Yea, majority of sets I have seen locally are all engraved which is probably their biggest selling point to the general public over Step.

Agree. And I don't think anyone will argue with that. However, it offers what most don't: Customization. But, in fairness, Step does advertise their Blacksteel for around CAD $139.99. Yet... Tydan isn't as well-known. So... perhaps if Tydan were to become more established, then we may see their prices come down in the future to be competitive with Step. As of now, I think they're still in some R&D phases (hence, the higher cost).

I've asked around and from what I've been told: Comparable. Some even went as far as to say: Same steel, same tech. While I can't confirm/deny that statement, I can say that when I had LS2 Step Blacksteel on my original VHs, that it felt very similar to these Tydan DLC+mirror runners on my current VHs. What remains to be seen: Whether or not the coating and edges hold up over a long period of time.

Just curious if the black on tydan is a dull finish like it seems in the pics and not mirror like blacksteel.

.

In order for them to become more established they would have to be sold in more shops, no shop is going to be able to compete with tydan when they offer direct to consumer. they'll need to also find a way to bring that cost significantly lower if they want to compete.

Hello mc88,

I'm glad to see you again on the icehockey forum.

Is Tydan's DLC coating more better than the other companies' "black steel"s?

I don't like something coated runners because it can't be done debarring by traditional method with oil stones.

The theory of coated runner debarring is even just wipe with camo leather.

I'm very worried about that.

Too early to tell.

Leather strop to deburr or don't use anything. As long as you take care of your runners, you shouldn't have to hone.

On that note, the Tydan runners DID NOT break my Sparx machine. It's still truckin'. My guess is that it was having a hell of a time removing the coating from the bottom of the steel, so it was stopping after 1 pass. I just ran it across some un-coated LS2 steel and it did all 4 passes without a problem.

I guess I'll have to put the Sparx to the Tydan test when I need to sharpen my skates again. But for now, at least I didn't kill the machine!  :usa:

I get my ironically blacksteel (didn't know about them at the time) steel sharpened by them, best sharpening and profiling ever.

It's neat seeing what they are doing; last time i was there they had a batch made for Patric Hornqvist.

According to my buddy who has a pro shop and has had first hand experience with Tydan, Step, Massive, and Byonic, the Tydan DLC is better than every other companie's....Tydan apparently uses a DLC 4 coating whereas Step is only DLC 2

Small update: Steel has held up great so far. No chipping in the coating nor problem areas to note. Last week was the first time I had to resharpen them. Threw them in my Sparx machine and they turned out freshly sharp; again, no issues to report. I'll follow up again in another month or so.

For what it's worth, my Tydan steel was the worst steel I've ever used.  The only thing worse than the steel, is their customer service. My issue with the steel was that it got extremely dinged up and nicked after every skate. Like noticable chunks of the steel were breaking off. Two of my buddies have the same issue. They continue to suffer with it, I moved on to Bladetech Steel, which is performing a lot better for me. When I contacted their customer service, all they did was give me all of their marketing bullshit and said "well thats not supposed to happen." Gee, thanks.

I have heard that since I ordered mine (Around October 2017), they changed their DLC process (without telling anyone publicly).  Maybe they're good now... but the ones I have are pure shit.  Fuck that company. Step Blacksteel is still the best on the market, by a mile.
