When I bought my first and only should pads I preferred the fit of the 2 piece in my Supreme One.8 pads. I've been searching for slimmer, less bulky pads like the crazy lights or apx2 and I noticed that most new pads are all one piece. Not sure how to explain the feeling but I like how the 2 piece is tucked under the shoulder caps and moves with you rather than lifting the cap when move your arm.

Do you guys have a preference or are there other features that you look for in particular with respect to shoulder pads?

Crazy Lights, just like the name, crazy light, very mobile, absolutely does not soak up sweat. That's why I use them.

The one piece connect the same way the 2pc does, under the shoulder cap on a strap that's usually adjustable.  I'm sure it varies by brand/model but on my RBZ's (same as CL/Jetspeed/etc) it attaches to the main section with a large strap that you can adjust the length on, the shoulder caps attach separately and both are free to move on their own.  I compared my RBZ's to my friend's Tacks which had 2pc bicep pads and the main difference I noticed was the 2 pc offered more coverage/protection than the 1 pc variety.  I think maybe brand/model differences might be what you're seeing or feeling when trying a CCM pair compared to your old Bauers.

As for a light pad, the CL/Jetspeed/RBZ line is great but I'd also check out the STX pads, a teammate has them and they look really nice with a streamlined design and nice pricepoint.
