Does anyone ever give up on the search for the piece of pro gear they really want and just buy the retail counterpart?

I’m toying with the idea but don’t know if I can actually go through with it. Anyone ever do this and either regret or are happy with that decision?

I don’t think I have that big of a hard on for pro stock that I wouldn’t buy something I want only because it’s not pro stock. Apart from gloves, socks, pants, and jerseys, the rest of my gear is retail.

I’d say my one exception is a pair of ‘19 WC shells that may never become available so I made a pair myself

What piece of equipment are you searching for?

I’m looking at picking up a pair of ft1 retail gloves because I’m borderline not interested in waiting for a pro pair in black to pop up. But I go back and forth on it and can’t decide if I’ll instantly regret it due to the fact it isn’t pro stock. This might sound dumb but the struggle is real lol

I’d only wear retail skates and protective, personally.

New model CCM gloves are fairly slow to come to market unless you find them at an eq sale. I remember having to wait a season and a half for qlts to start popping up in 13. For sure they'll come around by at least mid-season this year. The weird thing about ccm is I find that retail fits smaller than team stock in terms of gloves, at least with the last few iterations: qlt, jetspeed, etc. In retail I wear 14 in CCM and 13 in pro stock.

I noticed that too, the ft1 retail 13’s are tiny so I ordered a pair of pro 14’s and they were too big.

Don’t give up. I found a pair of gloves that I thought would NEVER hit the market. New at that. I ended up selling them since I didn’t like the fit as well as the previous version, but I did find them. I think black FT1s will show up in the near future on PSH or other sites. They’ve have FT1s for other teams, most recently Capitals.

I wear some retail gear, and retail skates. For gloves, pants, helmets, I like the pro gear since it’s much cleaner. Not as many logos, fancy palms, stripes, etc.. Bauer is especially bad about it.

I'm with the other posters here... sort of. Given a short period of time, you'll be tripping over pro stock FT1 gloves. However, my personal issue with pro stock CCM gloves is this: They actually don't seem to be as nice as their retail counterparts.

CCM's retail gloves seem to have nicer, more comfortable liners and offer stretch gussets (though that's more of a personal preference), and speaking in my capacity as a pro stock glove whore myself, I'd have no qualms rocking an off-the-rack pair of FT1s. Even the 4-Roll Lite Pro gloves that are out right now for $140 are superb. As Maligator above me pointed out, Bauer is notorious for being the opposite. Bauer screen prints six dozen logos on their retail gloves, and while I praise the 2S Pros for being immensely comfortable, they're as hideous as the dog that was sent through the teleporter in The Fly II. Bauer is also obscenely overpriced, which is reason #2 why I seldom buy their retail gear, but I'm going off on a rant here.

To summarize, retail CCM gloves are pretty dang legit, and if you like the retail feel (palms, gussets, etc.), why keep torturing yourself? If going with a cleaner look is more important, though, I'd wait until PSH and eBay get in several hundreds of pairs over the next year or so. You'll probably also save some green in the process.

Thanks for the insights I’m also extremely picky with gloves and have not used a retail pair in ten years. I know eventually they’ll pop up on psh or hockey monkey etc but sometimes and the downfall to the pro stock game is nothing’s ever readily available when it’s a time you just want it when you want it lol

The insight into the ccm retail gloves is helpful though with sizing and quality etc.

Meigray has a pair of Matt Grzelcyk 13” Bruins FT1 but it’s hard to tell what kind of shape they’re in. It looks like they have a decent sized rip on the one roll on the front of the glove, but if you’re desperate enough they might do the trick.

I wear retail skates and shoulder pads.

The only retail gloves I can wear are Sher-Wood M90's because they have a pro stock look :)
