Hey all, just thought i'd share a new project i'm working on and see if anybody here was interested in following the progress.

I'm making a custom set of shoulder pads, low profile yet high strength protection; seems to be an impossible combo out there at least in terms for as low profile as i'm personally looking for.

The base pad is going to be Sherwood 5030 shoulder pads with the following modifications:

  • D3O pad insert for the chest
  • D3O Ghost Armor pad inserts for under the shoulder caps
  • D3O Ghost Armor shoulder blade inserts for the back
  • Adjustable shoulder caps
  • Additional Shoulder cap from Gator Armor pads

I'm very excited for the project and will be updating with pictures along the way!

Sounds awesome, I'll definitely be interested in seeing the results. I've done tons of these over the course of time, including:

-Padded motocross shirt with added D30 in the chest, back, and shoulders. Great for pickup.

-My old lightwieght lacrosse shoulder pads from college with Warrior caps/bicep pads. Super light and protective enough for beer league. The caps came from intermediate shoulder pads, so they're much less bulky but still cover my shoulders. Chest and clavicle protection is great. They are Brine Lo-Pros and remind me a lot of the original Farrell pads (which never fit me right.)

-CL body with Warrior caps. These got super loose after my weight loss and I had to sell them. They were never my favorite, but a lot of people swear by this combo.

"What is your lowest/best price?" is NOT an offer.

That sounds awesome. The issue I have is often the chest part is good and padded but the shoulders are too bulky. I wear 11kfs pads still and hate the size of the caps. The ideal Shoulder for me is one with smaller caps like the U+CL with a way harder chest piece. I’m really excited to see what you make! I wish I was more handy.

Curious if you will be cutting the D30 chest and shoulder blade pads to fit the segmented "channels" sewn into the existing pad body, or attaching to the inside/outside of the pads?

I was actually planning on fabricating something that would be able to house the chest plate so I don’t know how much of the existing sherwood padding on the chest side will remain. However the back I am trying to keep as close to original aesthetically speaking. I have a rough mockup designed I’ll try and attach.

If you haven't already bought the SherWood pads, look at the more recent model with the two piece shoulder cap/bicep pad. You would likely be able to skip having to add any padding to shoulder, and maybe move it to the bicep area.

I am just using pads i already had besides the D3O but i did consider this, i had also had the idea to make these one adjustable as well as that is a modern feature on most pads now.

Just a quick update on the project this week, I began dismantling the Sherwood 5030’s and because of the square stitching pattern through the pattern, it looks like they wont work for the project. I have been looking for something similar but it looks like I’m going to have to fabricate something. I’m planning on using some sheets of 420 denier nylon and canvas to make the body of the pad.

Edit: Update: I sent in the pads to Hockeymenders for disambly/reasembly and Joe has advised against using the Sherwood 5030's as a base due to the square stitching pattern compromising the integrity of the pads if disassembled. He has advised me to search for something in which I can insert the pad to which so far has proven to be difficult. He also informed me of the materials he would use for this project and I will be trying to fabricate something using those that might be able to house the pad inserts.

Apologies on previous misinformation. I had sent this project  in to Joe at Hockey menders and under his recommendations these pads would be severely compromised if disassembled due to the stitching pattern. As i have been looking into alternative shoulder pad options i will also be using Joe's suggested materials to try and fabricate something to accommodate the correct dimensions for the padding inserts.

Was not my intention to claim all responsibility to the input of the project by any means but I am still eager to get the project done so I will be working some sort of dimension sheet in the coming days.

Well after the long wait and a lot of help from one of my billet moms who did the stitch work and was very patient with me. I finally have a rough version of the shoulder pads that I will be trying for the upcoming season. Here are some of the pictures! Thanks again to hockeymenders for the original analysis and advice for what should be done as he originally assessed the project! Let me know what you guys think.

The next step i was going to work on was enclosing the pads so they look a little more refined but i wanted to test them as our season snuck up on us.

Update:

So finally got to test these on ice and they were extremely satisfying to say the least.

All the mobility and freedom of the sherwood 5030s but you actually feel protected thanks to the D3O inserts. Hits felt no different than if they were in the more modern shoulder pad selections.

Only downside is the abdominal exposure as there is no coverage there but still love how they turned out! I am hoping to eventually stitch in the components so they are within the padding and not exposed in the near future.
