Hi there,

Does anybody have experience cleaning the discoloration from elbow pads? or even shoulder pads? Picked up a pair of elbows, and while the interior appears lightly used, there is yellow discoloration on the exterior.  Just wondering if anybody has experience cleaning / whitening these areas?  Or is it impossible, because it may be glue.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Tyson.

I’m just commenting to follow this post. I have a pair of shoulder, elbow and shin pads that all have the yellow discolouration too. I’ve tried cleaners but it doesn’t seem to come off much better afraid of ruining the pads with something harsher. I’d also love to know.

Yes, if the pad wasn't heavily used the yellow is often from the glue. It can be tough to wash out completely, and when you don't it makes a new "stained" area. I've had good luck with oxyclean in the washing machine.

I soak them in oxyclean overnight, then rinse with warm water and dry the next day. It'll get rid of most of the discoloration, minus some of the harder areas that were discolored from glue, as Monty mentioned.

Hand wash with zote bar soap in as hot water you can stand. Takes a little work , but works Great

Will add a quick comment here around the “yellow”. You have to assess if the discolouration is from adhesive, from foam aging, or from sweat. Adhesive and foam aging are not worth the time or effort as you will either cause further noticeable discolouration or potentially wear out the padding.

However when it comes to yellowing from sweat and use, this will come out with extremely hot water and soap. I’ve been able to rescue VERY yellowed equipment with just soap and hot water.

If you are talking about the Jofa/RBK white foam that is covering elbow pad caps, or the material that makes up the rest of the pad, those can be cleaned with great results. If it’s something like shoulder pad caps that have a mesh type fabric with the foam padding underneath those are less likely to come “white” as the foam Color cannot be restored.

A small warning too, if you soak any of those pieces that have Velcro straps too long the adhesive between the Velcro and the leather piece may separate and lose its tackiness. Especially the made in China stuff that uses a cheaper synthetic leather piece. The made in sweden pro stock actually used a different leather material and even a different adhesive layer.

Hope this helps and if you are trying to clean something specific and want pointers I’m happy to help!

Thanks man. I totally appreciate the thorough response.  And hope that this info will be useful to others as well.

As for myself, i'm planning to clean a pair of Elbows with the discoloration on the outer side/exterior.  Not the elbow cap, but everywhere else.

Thanks again!

Update:

So I went the Oxiclean route.  Put 4 scoops into a bucket, and let it soak for 6 hours.  Heres the before and after.   Thanks to all on the forum for your ideas and suggestions, I'm grateful for your time and efforts.
