Hey all, just curious as to what size and brand shins you all wear? Also height and tongues under or flop? Looking for comparisons. Myself, 15" CCM RBZs, tongue under, 5'7. Thanks, Dave

I have short but thick calfs. I need a 13” as 14” are too long. Jr pads are much too small around (made my legs look like tree trunks) so I had to buy a pair of 16” pads and chop the bottoms off. They are heavily used 7k pro. No graphic left and no liners i got for cheap. I got some marine waterproof trim and went over the bottom so it doesn’t cut my skates. It’s not ideal but they work for me. I don’t have any options.

5'10, short legs, shins over tongue. I wore a 14" Easton 85S shin which was perfect, unfortunately they broke, now I use a 14" 21K that feels a bit short.

Retail CCM run about an inch shorter than almost every other brand, hence 15". I wore 14 " Easton EQ Pros and 14 " APXs and were about the same length

I've had a few CCM/RBK retail pads over the years, as well as some Bauer X900's a few years ago and if anything the Vapors were slightly shorter than any of the CCM/RBK's, not by much but it was part of the reason I got rid of them.

I'm 5'9" and wear 15" shins, currently have Jofa 5090's and CCM 19K Pro (got these right when Covid hit so haven't even had a chance to try them yet), previously I had SuperTacks.  I've always been a shins over tongues guy but feel like my shins don't go as low as they used to over the skates, I think it may be b/c of modern boot designs (comparing my current skates to old Graf 705's from the 90's), I don't think I could comfortably wear a 16" shin guard so I'll just deal with it.

5’9 and use 14” Jofa 6090’s.

I was in 15’s for years and then decided to drop down a size. The 14’s just seem to fit and look better overall.

So the reason I asked this question in the first place was I was wondering if pads too long could possibly impede forward flex of a skate. Seems like all of you that are a couple of inches taller than I are using the same size or an inch shorter pads. Any thoughts on this?

I don’t think you’d have that issue unless you’re going way too big. The Bauer shins flex at the bottom so that’s not really an issue for those regardless.

I’m 6’2 and I wear 15” when I flop because they rest perfectly on the top of my tongues at the size. If I’m going to tuck my tongues I go 16” to get a little more coverage so they’re not trying to pop out.

The thing I tried last night was to go a touch looser on top eyelet and not tape around bottom of shin. 14s seem like the more logical size for my height but I would have to see if anyone out there may be looking for 15s. Thanks for the responses

It all depends on the skate, how you tie it, and shape of the shin guard, how you tape it, etc. a bunch of variables.

I've had some shins that felt too tight on top of the skate so flattened the bottom a little to make them sit a little nicer, others don't interfere much because they're a little wider.  Also some skates have the top eyelet area a little thicker or higher which will change how it sits (I generally skip my second eyelet but do the top eyelet, I'd imagine those who skip the top eyelet might have more interference).  Then there's how you tape your shins... if you go lower and tighter with the tape it'll restrict more (some people go almost around the ankles), if you leave the bottom of the shin looser, either by not taping as tight down there or not doing a lower wrap, you'll have a little more freedom of movement.  So yea, there's a lot of variable lol.

I leave the 3rd or 4th open(skates not in front of me) and like I said did not tape the bottom of my shins and left the top eyelet a touch looser than normal. Definitely helped
