Recently I replaced my LS5 carbon which I loved but needed to replace. So I went to LS Pulse had them profiled 9 ft radius and I have had nothing but problems with my steel. Playing for 25 years I don’t ever remember having this many issues with steel. First pure hockey the shop seemed like they didn’t even sharpen them and because I couldn’t stop or cross over without falling on my ass it was a complete embarrassment. Grew up playing travel AA. I took them to Jerry’s hockey and had them sharpened and the profile checked and now I can cut steak and are way too sharp and I can barley stop without the feeling of destroy my ankles. I can turn on a dime but they are digging in wayyyy too much and the sound on the ice sounds like I’m carving an ice sculpture. I’ve done 5/8ths cut for the last 10 years and only the last several I’ve experimented with the FBV. Anyone have any issues???

I switched back into an old set my LS3s with the FBV 100/50 that night and what a difference. Seemed twice as fast with much less work. I’m considering buying a wissota machine and sharpening my kids and my skates myself. The lack of care in sharpening around the shops by me seem to be a joke. Haven’t seen one person check for levelness of the edges in years. I’m not sure if it’s the sparx machines or the high school kid not dressing the stone correctly. Either way I’m beyond frustrated.

So I took both sets of steel sharpened at 5/8s equivalent to FBV 90/1 and now skated today and now both sets of steel now dig in like stated above. I can’t win. Not sure what to do or what steel to go with and who I can trust to put a good edge on them. I’m in suburbs of Chicago. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

A number of things...

1. Personally FBV for me never felt like it's equivalent in ROH as do most studies claim for various reasons. You can google the how and why.

2. Invest in a relationship with one shop guy or sharpener. Book appointments, etc. Tell them what felt wrong and what didn't. If a sharpener is switching your blades from roh to fbv there is a larger margin of error, especially if they've never skated on both or either. Sometimes it is a challenge to tell, particularly with new staff if they've made a fully formed v. Most sharpeners haven't skated on fbv. For me, I train new sharpeners by having them skate on their sharpenings.

3. It's a lot more factors than dressing the stone. Dressing FBV is very close to foolproof because it isn't dressed conventionally but on a spinner. The skate jig is adjusted with dials that modify front and back skate heights. Sharpening is a balance of knowing how to adjust both dials. It's a craft to do it correctly. I don't currently own a sharpener and have used 2 mail-in companies and they've both been awful. None of my edges have been square and one local guy over radiused and ruined one set of steel.

4. Buy a level checker so you can actually check.

5. You could also try to find a good mail-in sharpener.

Golden Gate Sharpening, hit up Jake

+1 for this; anyone who knows Jake knows how seriously he takes sharpening / profiling. It’s tough to find someone who cares so much about their craft.
