Been noticing a few of the guy's , I play with seem to really dislike me because I am always showing up in different glove / pants combo's. At this point , I wish I didn't buy all this stuff. But it's very hard to sell it , without giving it away & I said this in the locker room. So I put it in a cycle & get some use out of it. If it was me on the other side , I would say , wow that guy really likes hockey glove & pant colorways , more power to him. I would not dislike him for it. Does this happen to some of you guys , or is it because I live on scumbag Long Island. I am a very quiet low key guy , who plays very clean & just wants to have fun & get a good workout. I never even talk about the gear , there's this one guy who seems to really hate me over it.Thank's for letting me vent

I'll say it's because of Long Island

 

No one on my team seems to notice anything. The only two pieces of gear I can think of that got anyone's attention were the Wild's tan WC gloves and the Super Tacks girdle (only because one guy was looking to get out of pants and into a girdle). Was surprised nobody noticed the STX Halos which I was expecting to cause a stir or when I first got the Tacks X helmet purely because of cost (even if the pro stock cost a fraction of retail). We'll see if anyone notices the wood-look PSHS twig I picked up.

I will say though, that I'm a bit self conscious about always swapping gear so I usually swap matching sets every month or two so that I can use all of the gear that I have. Don't want it to sit but also don't wanna be that guy with new pants every week

I'd get guys commenting on it but its mostly "Where'd you get that?" or How come you buy multiple pairs of gloves? But they're friendly about it, and when I explained that I collected them to wear its usually the end of it. Or I'd show them where to get their favourite team or something and they'd be hooked. Some people are just straight miserable in their own lives, and project it onto you because you're different (in that of gear). Fuck em, wear all of it. At once.

I vote Lawn Guyland. Here in Atlanta, where hockey is a niche sport for better or worse, the most anyone says is "how many pants/gloves do you have?!?". I tend to rotate something new each week in my non-competitive league. It's a laid back vibe so it's all in fun.

In fact, in the last game of each season, I'll intentionally wear mismatched gloves, socks and pants in the most garish combo, like Wild green pants, one Preds yellow sock, one red Flames sock, one white Vegas glove, and one Oilers blue glove, or something like that.

Are they just chirping or do they actually go out of their way to harass you? Is it public drop-in or a specific group? People (like the guy you mentioned) have issues with their lives, jobs, spouses, etc and take their anger out on the rink. Because most people just wear black retail gear and blend in, your pro stock gear will stand out and these insecure guys will see you as a target. People often misconstrue wearing matching pro stock sets as showing off and flexing, even if that is obviously not your intention. If you enjoy the skate and wearing your gear, then keep doing it and just remember how miserable they are. 

 

If you're not enjoying it, find a new group to play with. Try to get into a private, invite-only skate with other players around your skill level. They will be more expensive because of the ice rental costs, but the organizers usually focus on playing hockey, don't want to waste their ice time, and will kick out guys that cause trouble. It may take a few tries before you find one that fits you best.

 

My preference is to wear neutral sets to pickup and save the flashier sets for stick and puck and pond hockey. You can't go wrong with a black or white jersey and socks with black gloves/pants/helmet.

Its a open hockey , $15 for 2hr's & only 3 miles from my house. A lot of the same people come every week. A few guy's  make comments here & there , but not really nasty. There's one guy who I have had problems with before , who always has a DBag comment. He's a rich alcoholic & always acts like a jerk , he's not a good person. Anyway , I'm going to use the same sets 2 or 3 times in a row & cycle the sets like that. wish I didn't buy all these gloves & pants ( over 30 sets ). But it's done & I am not giving stuff away to get rid of it. Even if I wasn't in to the different colorways like I am , I could care less if someone else was. People are Jerk's & there's nothing we can do about it.

I would get chirped a lot with pro gear, usually in men's league. Nobody cared in drop-in games. I found that most of the chirps came from guys with the same equipment they wore in high school. I sometimes think it's a badge of honor for guys to wear the crappiest, oldest gear they can find.

 

I slowly got out of my pro stock hobby and have a retail player set and a retail goalie set. I'm transitioning to goalie almost full-time, so I found that I'd rather spend money on that gear than a bunch of pro sets. Clearing out my closet of all my old gear and apparel. I still come back to look at others stuff though, because I enjoy the modifications and new tech from equipment.

This is very true. These same guys also think that washing and airing out their gear is lame, so you can smell them as soon as you enter the locker room. If your bag isn't a petri dish, you're a total bender bro!

Also seems comments I get are from people with money , this Dr has made comments about all my gear , he wears a pair of skates from 1995.

Haven’t done it yet, but I’ve considered (on multiple occasions) to ask a fellow player who smells to high heaven if I could wash their gear for them. It’s not difficult

I'm on LI and don't hear any of this stuff.  I'm on 4 teams (an over 40 weekend team, 2 over 40 weekday teams in diff divisions, and an 18+ weekend team), I have different gloves/shells for every team b/c I'm an addict haha.  I've actually experienced the opposite... there's a handful of guys on various teams that also have some nice gear and we'll comment on it from time to time, I mean after a while you start seeing the same guys over and over so it's like an unspoken respect for the rad gear. 

Sidenote, if you're in Midnight Hockey there's a good chance I've taken photos of your team ;-)

I love when I’d get the occasional chirp for wearing pro pants or gloves and they realize I paid half of what they paid for retail garbage. Some guys I play with are repalming one year old $209 retail gloves and spending $200 on mid range pants. Not to mention the $300 helmets.

Agree with Moose. Only comments I’ve ever gotten were about sticks and I responded by saying how cheap I got them and the persons jaw dropped. I also only really wear black sets so I don’t draw a ton of attention.

in my draft league I wear a different set every week and try to make it topical. a few weeks ago when Kessel passed 1000 consecutive games I wore a Vegas sock, a Yotes sock, Leafs shell and Penguins gloves. last week after Tage Thompson scored 5 goals I wore my Sabres Winter Classic set. some seasons nhlfan79 and I play on the same team and there's definitely pressure to "show out" every week. 

the most I get is "how much gear do you have?" and "how do you get that stuff?"

I also get those comments from workers who come into my basement on occasion.

The one set I tend not to wear as much as the other is my Habs set, but that’s because I’m in Leafs country and can’t stand the sub par attempts at chirping lol.

Modern retail gloves are terrible. Between the poor quality construction, tacky rubber markings, plastic jewel inserts, over the top branding, and cheap palms/gussets, today's "top of the line" gloves feel like they would have been in the $70 range just a decade ago. I tried on some $160 3X Pro gloves at the local rink and it felt like I was wearing X:20's. The team stock gloves from PSH are the same price and miles better in both quality and feel. 

 

I don't wear sets to pickup anymore but when I did, the guys that chirped me the most for my pro stock gear always looked and smelled like they went dumpster diving. Like previously mentioned, these guys take wearing the jankiest gear as a badge of honor, which is why I never took their shitty chirps seriously. They'd spend tons of time and money at the bar afterwards, so it wasn't a monetary issue. The younger, most skilled players always loved my gear and asked where I got it from.
