How do Custom true skates vs. ccm full custom vs. Bauer custom differ? What has people’s experience been? Retail skates don’t fit me very well anymore and I’ve been going custom since 2009. Please don’t force retail skates on me, I’d rather do custom again. I’ve had custom One95s, custom 11ks and custom VH/true skates. I know that technology has improved a lot recently. I was wonder if the process by ccm and Bauer has improved and how it has improved. The VH skates I did with pictures and tracing still fit me the best, even after doing the scanning process with true. Thank you in advance

I got the CCM scan with accommodations for flat feet and couldn’t be happier with the result.

Good Idea; Whistling while you work.

Bad Idea; Whistling while you eat.

Oddly enough, this is an area that I can actually give an opinion on. I've worn all three of these, in that order.

True/VH Custom - Did the Ipad scan, was really indepth and they took actual measurements as a safe guard. Received in May when VH transitioned to true and ended up getting a VH True hybrid skate. True toe box, VH Boot, True tendon guard. Pros: Overall the skate fit perfect even before some heat. Once baked it was a zero break in process and it was just a matter of getting used to a stiffer boot and fresh steel. I found they wore alright, the liners held up. Cons: The carbon sole was the death of me when it came to rivets. I had rivets replaced every two games some weeks. For some reason, they just wouldn't stay with the carbon sole. I tried copper, took out my insoles after every skate, dried them with a blow dryer after, nothing seemed to work. Then went to CCM.

CCM Custom - Also an ipad scan from the ccm guys. Then tried on some retail sizing to make sure what the machine said made sense. Was a quick turn around time, and got the AS3Pro's. Pros: Similar to the true, no breaking in period once I relearned how to tie my skates. I played with different lacing techniques until I found one that worked well for me. I found that if I over tightened the laced around the forefoot they'd kill my feet, but that just goes to show how good of a fit the skates are. The laces just need to be snug and the boot holds my foot. Good wear, nothing excessive. Cons: I got hit with a slapshot and the first later of (decorative) carbon cracked. The boot remained stiff, but was enough for me to question the integrity of the skate. Due to being outside of my warranty, CCM basically told me to kick rocks. Then onto Bauer this year.

Bauer Custom - Had the 1X skate when it came out, and it never fit me properly. Had it punched multiple times, so I knew custom bauer was the way to go. However now with their new fit system, its more universal for people. Little bit of a different scanning experience as you just stand on this machine and 20 second later its done the scan. You can then order directly from the machine and it'll suggest what to get ie: Fit #, size, width and any customizations you'd want to make. I personally when with the Mach Boot with pro stiffness, White felt tongue and Ti Pulse blade. Pros: I've skated in the Mach for 10 games or so now and they're amazing. Similar to above, after a bake and the proper tying of the laces, they're pain free and feel awesome. My biggest thing with them is that you really have to kick your heel into the pocket so it fits good, or it may feel a bit tight. Other than that, no Cons to note until after I've had them for a while.

A bit long winded - TLDR; Had them all, Bauer has exceeded my expectations so far.

- Always looking for new style stars gear, particularly Bauer!

Does Bauer allow for any additional sizing customization other than basic size, fit system, and width? I am mainly asking about differed widths in heel & forefoot for a single skate.

My feet are different lengths and widths, but I have two narrow heels. If I had to guess I am...

  • Left foot:    9 D
  • Right foot:  9 1/4 E-EE forefoot with D heel?

Does anyone know if Bauer custom skates allow for enough customization to meet my needs or would I need to try out True customs?
