He did an interview about it, said that too much tape diminished the puck feel.

Their trainer told Marc Savard that it was because growing up his family was really poor and he spread his tape out so he wouldn't go through as much. Talks about it at 3.20 hereHe did an interview about it, said that too much tape diminished the puck feel.

In the interview he’s talking about Pasta referenced both of these as to why he does it.

In another interview Pasta said that he uses that stippled finish on the Bauer blade for friction. I've never actually tried it but it makes sense. I would just be worried about too much moisture accumulating. I'll have to give it a try the next time I'm on the ice.
