Girdle shell is cut slimmer. The difference isn't huge though, so they're interchangeable. But if you wear a girdle, and have the option, go for a girdle shell.

Definitely interchangeable though

It COMPLETELY depends on the make and model of the shell. I can fit into sizes XS to XL depending on the make/model. Your best bet is to try something on before buying - as with anything. Myself, the only way I'll buy a shell without having tried on the model is if it's a size small.

That's true. But Bauer markets that shell at the retail level to go over their girdles, so it's a giant mess.

Kovey's right. If it covers you pants or your girdle, you're golden.

Here's a pic of 2 shells. Both are XL and Tackla.
One of the left is a GIRDLE shell one on the right is a PANT shell. As you can see the difference is minimal at most.
Now, look close at this pic. The GIRDLE shell is under the PANT shell. The width of the legs on both shells is the same, inseam the same, only difference is within 1/2" on top of the GIRDLE (bottom) shell where the stretch material is.
