Over the last few months I've started using the flat bottom sharpen. I use a 100/75 which is a sharpest one that they have. usually it's ideal after the first 20-30 mins on the ice or so.

The last time i was at the LHS getting the skates sharpened they told me that the flat bottom machine was out for repair so they only had the normal machine working. I contemplated not getting it done but my skates were dull. I had them do the sharper sharpen on the blades and off to the rink i go.

It felt a little different at first. didn't feel like it glided as smooth. Then again it could have just been the ice. After about 2 sessions on them i lost my edge a few times and felt like they got dull pretty fast. When i would really try to wheel it felt like they didn't grab as compared to the flat bottom sharpening.

What i've noticed is that the flat bottom V sharpen tends to stay sharper longer than a normal sharpen. Also i felt more confident leaning into turns when i had to change directions on a flat bottom v then i did on a normal sharpen on the sharpest setting.

Just wondering if what i experienced is a placebo effect or have others notice the same thing.

What are your thoughts?

I started out on 90/75 about 1.5 years ago.  One time I had to go back to regular hollow and I felt like I was skating in quick sand.

Right now I'm on 95/1 which is one of the sharpest.  For me FBV def grabs and there is not as much speed lost in turns.

I agree on the FBV sharpening lasting longer.  Probably due to less friction.  I only have to get my skates recut on the FBV when they get nicked up.

Once it warms up again I will be going back to 90/75.

Ditto the skating in sand feeling when going back to a normal ROH sharpening. I've been on the FBV for a few years now and would never go back, period. When you get to be my age you use every advantage you can to keep up with kids 1/3 to 1/2 my age, lol. The FBV is just such a thing. I've not said much around here besides to a couple friends on the same teams as I'm on. Why spill the beans?  ;)

We dont have blackstone at my shop so I use the Blademast form of the FBV which is the BFD

THere are some small differences but very similar in feel after using both either way will never go back to a standard ROH

I use the sharpest BFD which is equivalent to 3/8th and have to sharpen about ever 2-3 skates

I once just for shits when back to standard 3/8ths and hated everysecond of it and agree with the skating in quick sand comment

I've heard that BFD is a crappy knockoff. Have you compared it to legit FBV?
