#380973 Steel Sharpening Issues

Posted by firefighter55 on 25 March 2022 - 07:35 PM in Hockey Gear

Recently I replaced my LS5 carbon which I loved but needed to replace. So I went to LS Pulse had them profiled 9 ft radius and I have had nothing but problems with my steel. Playing for 25 years I don’t ever remember having this many issues with steel. First pure hockey the shop seemed like they didn’t even sharpen them and because I couldn’t stop or cross over without falling on my ass it was a complete embarrassment. Grew up playing travel AA. I took them to Jerry’s hockey and had them sharpened and the profile checked and now I can cut steak and are way too sharp and I can barley stop without the feeling of destroy my ankles. I can turn on a dime but they are digging in wayyyy too much and the sound on the ice sounds like I’m carving an ice sculpture. I’ve done 5/8ths cut for the last 10 years and only the last several I’ve experimented with the FBV. Anyone have any issues???

I switched back into an old set my LS3s with the FBV 100/50 that night and what a difference. Seemed twice as fast with much less work. I’m considering buying a wissota machine and sharpening my kids and my skates myself. The lack of care in sharpening around the shops by me seem to be a joke. Haven’t seen one person check for levelness of the edges in years. I’m not sure if it’s the sparx machines or the high school kid not dressing the stone correctly. Either way I’m beyond frustrated.

So I took both sets of steel sharpened at 5/8s equivalent to FBV 90/1 and now skated today and now both sets of steel now dig in like stated above. I can’t win. Not sure what to do or what steel to go with and who I can trust to put a good edge on them. I’m in suburbs of Chicago. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
