I recently went to a new skate sharpening place in my area and when I was there they asked me what cut i normally used. I have never been asked this question because I think I usually get the standard sharpening. That got me curious as a new skate sharpening cut could enhance my game. I am wondering what cuts you guys prefer and these details if you do not mind. With my details in brackets

Height: (5'7)

Weight: (150)

Position: (Winger)

Sharpening Cut: (Standard??)

Thanks all

There's going to be so many different answers to this. Some people like more glide, and other people like more "bite". But I'll play.

Weight: 190lbs

Position: Beer Leaguer/Referee

Height: 6'4"
Weight: 280
Position: Defense (eventually)
Sharpening: 1/2, standard profile and radius.

I used to used 3/8 for a little bit more bite when I had some issues bottoming out. Then I learned to get heavier on my edges, went back to 1/2 and haven't had issues since. It's a great medium of bit and glide if you ask me.

Height: 6'0

Weight: 195

Position: Defense

Sharpening Cut: BFD X7

I bounce between X7 and X6 but like alot of bit and sharpen my skates ever 2-3 skates

I also use a 9/10" combo radius.

I have the luxury of working at a shop and testing/tinkering with all this stuff to really dial in what fits my skating

First of all, you have to ask what that shop's standard is. Usually standard is 1/2 inch but some shops use 5/8s.

Height:5'9

Weight:160

Position:Defense

Cut:1/2

I love to be able to bite into the ice and feel that deep cut. As a dman i turn a lot and i love to feel that bite when I start skating backwards.

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 230

Position: Forward

Sharpening Cut: 90/50 FBV and 7/8" standard ROH before I started using FBV

I had transitioned gradually to a shallower hollow from 5/8" to 3/4" to 7/8". Before learning about ROH I always used to get the house cut which is usually around a 1/2" - that always felt too deep for me so and I never liked the way my skates would feel after a fresh sharpening. I'd only sharpen my skates once or twice a year as I liked the feel of the dull blades better than the freshly sharpened ones that would make me sink into the ice. Now that I use a shallower hollow I can get my skates sharpened more frequently and still skate on top of the ice rather than in the ice.

You should look at the page ken6473 posted above with more info on FBV that also touches on traditional ROH: http://www.blackston.../technology.cfm

As for the OP, at your height and weight I wouldn't go as shallow as I do. If you want to try something different than the standard house cut I'd try either a 5/8" regular hollow or 90/75 FBV if that's available. I do prefer FBV over a regular hollow so recommend that option if it is available to you. Then after you skate on the new hollow you can leave it is if you like it or go slightly deeper or shallower the next time depending on how it feels to you.

For the sharpeners out there, what's the "sharpest" cut you've done on a pair of skates?

I had a customer come in and ask for a 1/4. Gets his skates sharpened once a week. I couldn't imagine skating on that.

Google it and you will get great direct info ...

It will give you all the cuts and info such as "more bite , less glide" etc etc

Also you can change your sharpen due to ice conditions , in the summer I use 9/16 as the ice is softer.
In winter I use 1/2

Closer to 16 the less sharp it is.

People with the FBV, how often do you sharpen your skates? How many pairs of steel do you go through?

Just curious since it's almost an every skate sharpen

1/2" during winter, I flip-flop between 5/8" and 9/16" in the summer. As a defenseman, we tend to get stuck with rotating three D in a game. During those games, it's nice to have long glides and gradual pivots.

I find that I sharpen my skates about twice as often in comparison to a standard 1/2".
