Oh man, this is terrible.

Wait, why can't I skate? I did exactly what was shown in the pictures with my angle grinder from Lowe's! What do you mean...edges?

people always post lower end retail jofa or 1st gen rbk stuff at outrageous prices and Claim it’s “pro stock”. It’s really ridiculous. Any collector knows right away that it’s not the made in Sweden stuff or anything close to pro spec.

A few months ago, the same person kept messaging me offering $25 shipped for Swedish Jofa 9144 pro elbows that I had listed for $75 + shipping. Now they're listing Chinese Jofa shoulders for nearly $250 and saying they're identical in quality to the Swedish pads? :wth:

I’ve ranted about this before myself. Can’t handle all the sellers with the Chinese made 9135, 9144 and 9177 which are retail pads being listed as pro stock NHL elbows. End of story. The 9144 pro and 9177 pro from Sweden were not in the catalogue... because they are pro stock. Yet SLS is littered with “pro stock” Jofa that literally was available in every LHS during the 90s. At least those models have a lineage to the pro equivalents but it’s even worse seeing stuff like the 5500 shin pads going to uneducated buyers for $75... just because someone used a drop down selection or typed pro stock.

Yup I know. I have a pair of nearly new 9135 elbows that were listed as “pro stock” but were super cheap. They aren’t. I’ve never seen a pro with them. I just like the smaller bicep guard on them but have the awesome jdp cap. I got lucky on a used pair of 7kpro (the non Hyper x style) with no liner (I have a ultra pro liner). I don’t know if they are legit pro stock, but for 20 bucks why not.

The amount of rbk 3k-6k retail shins do 200 is silly even the 9k with the blue. They are retail! Not to say some pros don’t wear some retail stuff but they weren’t made in Sweden quality stuff. Same with elbows.

How do you know the pro 9144/77 from retail? I know the Reebok difference but not the jofa. I really do want to try a pair of size 4/5 9144/7k pads.

Same goes for the people that list obviously Indonesian-made retail practice jerseys (both Reebok and Adidas) as pro stock. The cut/fit more narrow and obviously not even close to the same quality as the MIC pro stock versions.

With the Jofa 9144 and 9177 the pro models made in Sweden actually are branded as 9144 Pro and 9177 Pro right on the bicep guard. The Chinese made retail just say 9144 or 9177. Asides from that they are different in quite a few ways.

Sweden 9144 pro has a different design in actual forearm mold compared to the Chinese 9144. It also uses better quality components such as real leather strap ends vs plastic, the mold is anatomically fitted and results in much better alignment and fit whereas the Chinese retail is not form fitted the same way and fits sloppy.

The 9177 pro vs 9177 is also the same story. Definitely superior quality in the Sweden made pro stock. Many people have claimed otherwise but I’ve actually owned and compared side by side. There are lots of subtle differences but the quality is night and day.

Also the pro models are lighter in weight than their retail counterparts.

I have some pics showing the differences for any gear nerds.

thanks for the awesome info! I’d love a pair of 9144 pro someday. Unreal pads. Thanks for the comparison. Makes total sense. Is the new Pro CCM Reebok stuff Sweden made?

No worries. Glad if it can help anyone out!

The last Sweden era pairs happened with the 7k pro and 8k pro which was first RBK/JOFA branded and then Reebok/JDP branded elbows. This is the RBK powered by JOFA era where all the designs are original Jofa but Reebok was the brand on the pads. When they rebranded the Reebok 7k pro to the Reebok 19k pro it was made in China. Production in Sweden stopped well before CCM took over. So yes, All the CCM stuff which followed is made in China. Sadly the JOFA plant in Sweden closed in 2011-12 and really that was the end of quality material and durability. My 9177 pro elbows will last 100 years!

ah that sucks. I mean lots of pros wear the new ones so they can’t be awful but nothing compares to the jofa Sweden quality. My 9135 are ok. The annoying fake leather strap has to be glued down constantly but they seem sturdy.

What are the 5044 and 5066? They look very similar

Yeah the fake leather strap separates from the Velcro easily on those 9135-9144-9177 models. Especially if you try to wash them!

The 5044 and 5066 are the precursors models.

So Sweden made 5044 became 9144 pro and 5066 became 9177 pro.

That being said there are different models of the 5044 that all are made in Sweden and have the same 5044 model number. The original was the leather capped white black and orange design. Circa mid to late 90’s. They changed the colors to the white and blue design when Jofa overhauled their entire product line. There is a blue and white leather capped 5044, then a foam capped version 5044 and even another 5044 with an updated mold that has subtle differences. Essentially 4 versions all made in Sweden, all called 5044 but stylistically a little different with material and color.

The last version 5044 before it became the 9144 pro was very similar. The main difference was the middle strap design. Personally I hate the 5044 middle strap as it’s secured at the bottom of the pad near the cuff in an “X” pattern instead of directly across like most pads.

5066 was the extended cuff version, also made in Sweden, and also had a variety of leather cap, foam cap, updated foam cap. The length of these cuff extensions changed drastically over the years. Again the last version 5066 was essentially the 9177 pro but has the same stupid middle strap design.

Both 5044 and 5066 were always made in Sweden and are a good option if you can find them in good shape. I prefer the foam cap versions over the leather personally. Just don’t like the middle strap design.

In between the models you have the 6000 series, 8000 and 9044/9077 series which are plastic cap junk made in China which I really dislike. They feel like 90’s roller hockey gear to me.

You should make a separate thread going into detail all the differences, would help a lot of people out and won’t be buried in this topic!

Custom everything.
