Gotta wear what fits your foot. That is why they make so many skates. No more one fits all!!

If you're testing for proper depth in the key area use the pencil test.

1 Undo the first four eyelets and loosen the rest.

2 Put your foot in and pull the tongue forward away from your foot.

3 place a pencil across the third and then fourth eyelets from the top.

If you can touch both eyelets and your foot is right under the pencil it's the ideal depth. If the pencil rests on your foot then the skates are too shallow. If your foot is way below the pencil it's too deep.

I wouldn't worry too much about the depth below the fourth eyelet from the top.

I know the pencil test. Where you are saying I don't touch the skate with the pencil in the jetspeed but it's really close. Closer than other skates I've tried. The part of concern is where the bend is. About eyelets 3-5 from the top.

I just wanted to show this pic to see if they at least look like they fit correctly and don't look too narrow or my foot busting out.
Are the eyelets supposed to wrap around the top of your foot?

The lacing pattern looks pretty good on the jetspeeds. If the pencil is really close to your feet for eyelets 3-5 from the top, but doesn't touch then they're the ideal depth in that area. They should wrap better after being baked, but the only skate that will wrap as well as the Mako is the VH. No other skates will wrap as well as those two. Based on the lacing pattern in the pictures, the heel lock you describe and the pencil test result; the Jetspeeds may work well for you, but they won't wrap the same as the Makos. If it were me, I'd demo the Jetspeeds and go to skates with both the Makos and Jetspeeds and spend some time in each back to back and decide which one feels better to you.

The lacing pattern on the Vapors looks horrible. I've experienced that kind of pattern personally when I tried the CCM U+ CL skates several years ago at a demo event. Those weren't the right fit for me at all.

Skated for a little today. Had to undo top eyelet in jetspeed, I go all the way up in mako.

Fit is real good overall. Close to the foot like mako but these have a bit more room in toe cap, heel lock in jetspeed is better for me..!

Performance wise pretty different. My makos have steel that's two years old so big diff there. Def feel a little more neutral in jetspeed.

Only thing is that I felt like I was on my inside edges a lot when gliding. Would think I should be more neutral.

May demo again. If I bought these I'd probably go to the 300's or 290's.

Definite think these fit me correctly so know what to look for going forward.

I wish vapors were deeper. They may work good for me given pitch seems closest to mako need to they the new line on to see fit. The ones pictures were from a few lines ago and were toward bottom of the line. They were x 4.0

Just find the boots that fit/feel best and then you can have a lift installed, the blades profiled or the holder changed. Any of the above is possible; so you don't need to worry too much about the stock pitch. The fit and feel of the boots are the most important thing and it definitely doesn't look like the Vapors come close to fitting you well - I don't think the fit of the Vapors has changed too dramatically, but it never hurts to try some skates on. It sounds like the Jetspeeds are a pretty good fit.

I wear Mako 2s- size 10.0 EE, which is actually .5 sizes too long, and still a bit low in volume in the mid foot. So, I have volume issues in the middle as well. Also, the white felt that hangs off the tongue, has been bunching up and giving me a bit of grief at the left inside mid foot. So, I just cut out a significant amount of white felt, along each of the 2 edges of each of the 2 skates, same like Doug Hamilton does:

Next skate is Thursday, we will see if there is any difference. If you are going to try this at home, then do not go too close to the tongue, as you will clip parts of the tongue that extend into the white felt. The way that Hamilton has it is perfect, I just thought I'd try to be smart and take the felt off, all the way down to the tongue, and noticed that I was snipping tongue in the process. Oops.

Went back to the shop where I bought my makos.  Tried on the vapor x800 in 6D, 6.5D, Bauer Supreme 180 in 6D, 6EE, 6.5D, 6.5EE.........we (me and employee there) came to the same conclusion that none of these skates had the volume I need in the instep area.  Tried on the jetspeed again and she said that looked like the fit for me.  When I tried on the demo jetspeed that sales person wasn't nearly as helpful.

Her suggestion was when I'm ready get the skates, take some time to try and get used to them.  If I'm not then we'll look into shims, profiling etc. to put them in a more forward pitch like the mako.

So, I know that the top of the line ones are too much skate.  Deciding on the 300 or 290.  I can read the tech description but not really sure what you're getting with one vs the other.  I am coming from makos, play twice a week (once a while 3, but rarely), 5'8 195 lbs.........What I like most about the jetspeed is the close fit and amazing heel lock.  Don't want to lose that so hoping it doesn't change going down the line.  Will try and find both locally to compare.
