Hey just wondering if anyone has any info on the Ultrasonic skates? Will they be a one-piece boot? I’m wondering if they’re worth waiting for or if I should just pull the trigger on one of the current offerings.

I don’t think it’s a 1 piece but from this pic I can see they got rid of those trashy injected eyelets, went to a carbon fibre toe cap and a new Tuuk holder

Why is the injected eyelets bad?

The first iteration of them on the original 1X skates were notorious for tearing, and it seems like they still tear even now despite an improvement in design. So my guess is a durability thing, can't keep warrantying $1000 skates because of a common failing part.

Custom everything.

The TUUK holder seems to be the same, no?

CCM has the patent on 1 piece boot construction, so B cant actually make it. They're trying to get around the patent by stitching the outsole higher up on the quarter

That's interesting since I would have assumed Bauer would have the Easton patents from the Makos to allow them to make a one piece boot. Huh.

I found the patent for CCM's monocoque shell once. I'm not a lawyer, but I would think the Mako is a different construction so it wouldn't violate. I think Bauer just doesn't want to admit being behind and are also not really behind in that they have majority market share. In that case, make small tweaks to improve your position, don't revolutionize. That's what they've been doing too, with their recent lines going slightly softer, the new toe box, etc.

I don't think CCM's patent excludes any other monocoque skates, just none using something too close to their particular recipe.

From browsing some of the relevant patents for VH/True, MLX/Mako, and CCM skates, it seems a significant portion of the description goes to clarifying what is particular about the design to be patented compared to other similar patents. It would make sense if part of the job of the patent is to specify what is unique and should be protected instead of falling under the umbrella of an already patented idea. While these three are "monocoque" or 1-piece boots, their approaches are different, and so they're allowed their own legal space on the market. That's my understanding, but I'm new to reading patents.

Here are some of the ones I've been looking at:

Bauer's patents

MLX: https://patents.goog...S20180242682A1/

Mako: https://worldwide.es...ion/CA2801233A1

VH Footwear's patents (I suppose these are True's now)

https://patents.goog...nt/US9668535B2/

https://patents.goog...S20160332063A1/

CCM's patent (there are more, but this is the most relevant one I could find)

does anyone have any insights if the fit has changed?  I wonder if they have applied any insights from  all the scans like they did with the vapor 2x pro.

I take scans with a grain of salt. I’m on my third pair of Bauer customs and I have friends at pro level who even after countless pairs of skates they’re still bunging up orders. From what I hear CCM is worse as is quality. I’m curious about whether or not the ultrasonic is worth moving on from my 1S customs that are tired. If this boot can be extended etc.

ccm is the only one thats actually building a custom last for each customer to build the boot around, not just modifying stock lasts that look close to the scan.

Right but my concern is the build quality of the skate itself and them backing it. Bauer may have messed up my orders but they made it right. If I’m in a 1S boot with +1 what would be the closest CCM comparable?

I have custom FT2’s and as far as quality goes, they are definitely top of the line but if we’re talking cosmetic, than not so much. The logos are chipping all off on the sides and the numbers or name on the tongue is just a cheap iron on that falls off. But if we’re talking quality of the actually product I’m using, I feel like they are incredible

I heard it was going to be an option in 2020 for customs.
