It could also be a heel cupping outsole, which is my bet. It looks too bulged compared to the quarters for me to think it's an outsole+quarter shell. Instead, it looks a lot like how previous Bauer skates have been made, just with a souped-up outsole. My guess is this is their attempt to maximize torsional rigidity in the boot without having to resort to making a monoshell. That way, Bauer's still Bauer, without admitting that they're not top shelf stuff. If they really wanted to, couldn't they just fire up Mako production again?

They should have just did green mitts with white cuff, green pants with white stripes. Would have been nice to see them use green coloured equipment for once, since they always use black.
