I feel it's a combination of the manufacturers applying the warranty policy incorrectly (as kovey points out) replacement for breakage from use instead of only truly defective cases along with abuse of the warranty system at the consumer level has contributed to the cost of ops. A true defect will typically be evident within 30 days.

Fake receipts are not making prices higher.
It is not the whole reason, but it is definitely part of the reason. I know way too many people that have warrantied their stick after smashing it over the boards, post, crossbar, etc. I also know people that will print fake receipts over and over again. I have a friend that proudly proclaims, "I bought one stick the entire time I was in high school, but I owned over forty!" If you think this manipulation of the system is not at least partially to blame for the cost of equipment you are delirious. Also, these sticks cost more to make than most people think.
