So here's my story...

I was an athlete through high school - mainly baseball (but also soccer and hockey of course). Scouted by MLB teams, but ended up on a scholarship at a big school. This was the 90's and I was a pitcher, so I did not do weights a lot, but worked out otherwise (running, bike, etc). Ate like an animal. LOTS of carbs, no restrictions. I would not put on weight at all. Literally, like 3 bagels and a basket a french fries for dinner or something. Was 6'1 and 185 in winter of '99.

I then blew out my arm the spring before going to college. The injury was bad. Went to school still not able to pitch, starting take PED's when I did get back and saw my velocity went down (which caused me to eat even more). I ended up enjoying the college environment too much and lost my scholarship due to poor grades. Went back home and started working for the family business.

I never changed my eating habbits though. Lots of carbs, lots of sugar (like 6+ cans of Coke a day). And since I wasn't playing baseball anymore, I was not working out. I was at work 9-5 and would come home wiped and not do anything. I ended up balooning. A year after graduting high school, I was 250lbs - so 65lb increase in a year.

Over the years, I would gain maybe another 7-10lbs/year. I started playing hockey again in 2009 (Jan 1st actually!), but not in an effort to lose weight - just to have fun. I wasn't losing weight actually as I usually would end up eating an entire medium pizza after the game! For sure putting in more calories than I burned.

So now it is this past summer. Due to a long work trip and some other hobbies getting in the way, I took my first break from hockey. I had all intentions of getting back into it, I just didn't want to pay $300+ and only be able to play 30-40% of the season. Two months after (So September) taking my break from hockey I realized that I was taking in a lot more fluids than normal. I was also pee'ing a lot more. One day I drank 9 liters of fluid and took about a 20 trips to the bathroom to pee. This went on for 2 weeks until I finally saw a doctor.

Turns out, I developed diabetes. Of course, due to my diet and overall lack of exercise over the past few months. Kinda scared me since I am only 32 years old and the possible long term effects of this if out of control include blindness and losing your toes/feet. As a hockey play and ameteur race car driver - both would be devastating to me.

I'm now on meds, a more limited diet, testing blood/sugar daily etc. Limited to 75g of carbs per meal (3 meals a day) and 30g carbs per snack (2-3 snacks per day). 2 months ago I was only eating twice a day (no breakfast) and was likely taking in 150-200g of carbs per meal when you include the soda I was drinking. Its been a change to say the least, but I am surviving. Am getting used to Coke Zero, eating breakfast, cut out the sweets, etc.

Its been 2 weeks to the day since drastically changing my diet (off of soda and sweets for the past 3.5 weeks as there was some time between my actual diagnosis and the day I went in to get my meal plan).

I played hockey for the first time since July about 2 weeks ago as well. Then went last night. It was a night/day difference. Whatever weight I have lost is really noticeable. I'm a little faster, a little more nimble and most importantly - can play longer.

I have not weighed myself since the day I got diagnosed, and likely won't for a while. I just feel that if I lost a lot of weight, I may start to cheat a little. Like "hey, I can have that hot fudge sundae, I'm losing weight!". Yet if I only lost a little bit I would say "f*ck it, its not working, whats the point!". Whatever I am doing now is working! My blood/sugar was 99 yesterday. 2 weeks before it was 282. 3 weeks ago it was mid-300's, which is borderline going to the hospital.

My goal is to get down to 250 (so a 50lb loss) by the end of 2014. I have gained over 50lbs in a year and want to lose it in a year! Hopefully I get less than that eventually, but for now its small steps.

My moral here is for the young guys out there. Your metabolism is getting get wonky. As you get older, you are going to find less time to work out. You won't be motivated. Make sure you change your eating habits to compensate. You will be tempted to keep eating the same, but watch yourself. Don't deveop the bad habbits I have (or had!).

Ok , I'll post links. Ill summarize most of it first as some may find it complicated.
When simplified it all makes a lot of sense and is not too hard to keep up.
Keep in mind this is based off training 4-5 days at least a week.
Cardio has to be included. I do abs 4 days a week.

On days where you train , you'll eat carbs (slow digesting , good carbs) 3 times a day.
Breakfast , lunch , post workout.

Rest days , you'll eat carbs once a day. Breakfast

1 day , a training day you'll eat carbs at every meal ... Ie a cheat day.
The following day should be a high cardio day to get things running again.

Some of the links list food types , but common sense.
Oatmeal , brown rice , quinoa .... Also eating carbs with certain vegetables ie. broccoli and protein really helps so down the
Digestive process , slowing it down decreases insulting spike. Insuline spike is what causes fat storage.

For my carb meals I have
Breakfast 1/2 cup rolled oats , when cooked I add natural peanut butter and 2 scoops chocolate whey isolate.

Post workout I have quinoa and ground chicken

3 rd carb meal , usually 1 slice whole wheat bread and 2 eggs , 6 egg whites.

I'am a little strict and usually only have a 3 carb day when I train and play hockey.
My usually days I train I just have carbs for breakfast and post workout.

http://www.muscleand...-me-diet?page=2

Steps 3-6 are key: http://www.rxmuscle....ng-program.html

I train sun-thurs , fri and sat I have 1 carb meal. Sun is my cheat day , Monday I skate in the am and train at night.
My training always ends with 40-90 mins cardio. Always ....

Life becomes chicken and veggies , beef and veggies , eggs , turkey bacon , egg whites.
Oh and protein shakes ....

Ask me anything I'd your confused or need ideas. Like I've said before being prepared is key......
Food cooked and ready to go at all times.

Also bodybuilding.com ships to Canada using a Canadian warehouse , so no duties anymore.
Some prices are as 50% lower than gnc.

Ha, well it didn't go as well as I would have liked it to. The first month and a half I was on a roll and I actually broke the 200lb mark. My overall eating habits have gotten much better (especially lunch) but some good ol craft beer is my weakness. As far as exercise, I now play hockey 3 times a week and jog/walk on the weekends. I honestly can't blame my results on just the beer, stress has kind of gotten the best of me. Regardless, I do feel better and I do know what I have to do to manage my weight more effectively... I just have to get disciplined.

So in short, I lost 12 pounds after all was said and done. Hate it that I gained a good bit back during these 3 months.

I will say that hockey pants do fit a little nicer now though.

Sorry to hear bud .... It's all about discipline , preparation and drive.
Unfortunately hockey 3 times a week and casual weekend exercise will only get you so far ....

If you're happy , so be it. As long as your life isn't at stake due to poor health ....
Me , I am a miserable man other than being in the gym. I eat the same thing everyday , don't drink much at all
And usually don't do any socializing other than hockey , gym.

Yet when I was my old self I wasn't happy either .... At least now I look better.
Oh well ... You know what you gotta do,
